Science

'The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or to understand something.  Nothing can compare with that experience' - Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin

Science plays a key part of the curriculum through our children’s entire school career, and a love of Science is created through finding the awe and wonder in our world.  We work hard to develop each child’s scientific knowledge and understanding.  Our children are first introduced to science in the Foundation Stage where it mainly falls within the area called Understanding of the World. They will learn to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.

Throughout their time with us, in Science our children explore a wide variety of themes and topics.  Children are encouraged to ask questions about why things happen and how things work.   They will also be asked questions about what they think will happen to help them communicate, plan, investigate, record and evaluate findings.  They will acquire knowledge and skills, gaining an understanding of the uses and implications of Science today and for the future.

Progressive learning objectives, enquiry questions, key vocabulary, working scientifically skills and high expectations all enable our children to broaden their scientific knowledge, and their enquiry skills are developed with increasing depth and challenge as our children move through the year groups. The sequencing of lessons helps to embed scientific knowledge and skills, with each lesson building on previous learning. There is also the opportunity to regularly review and evaluate children’s understanding.
